Originally opened after World War II, King’s Sandwich Shop rose to become an icon of in the downtown Durham area serving no nonsense hamburgers and hot dogs to baseball fans on their way to or from a game at the old Durham Bulls ballpark, which was close by.
However, in 2007, King’s closed up shop, leading to widespread speculation that the property would be swallowed up in the wave of redevelopment sweeping the downtown area.
Then, the McDermott family stepped in and purchased the property. They received permission from the original owners to continue with the King’s name. And after extensive renovations and enhancements to the menu to meet today’s standards, King’s Sandwich Shop was open again to the delight of many a longtime Durham resident.
King’s still serves up the same classic hamburgers and hot dogs, but their menu is packed with a variety of tempting options.
